Reports To: Facility Custodian Supervisor

Grade/Level: Pre-K-12

Amount of Travel Required: None

Work Schedule: 40 hours a week minimum with the possibility of some         

overtime; Monday through Friday

Job Summary:

The Custodian at the North Little Rock School District, within the Facilities Management Department, is responsible for maintaining, cleaning, and disinfecting various areas of a facility. This role involves performing basic cleaning, sanitation, and minor maintenance tasks. The Custodian will work under the supervision of the Facility Custodian Supervisor to ensure a clean and safe environment within the school facilities.

 

Essential Functions:

 

Cleaning and Sanitation:

  • Perform thorough cleaning and sanitation of classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas to maintain a high standard of cleanliness.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces to ensure a hygienic environment for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Empty trash receptacles and replace liners as needed.
  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors to keep them clean and presentable.

Event Setup and Support:

  • Arrange furniture and equipment for various school events, including athletic events, meetings, concerts, plays, graduations, and more.
  • Ensure that event spaces are adequately prepared and set up to meet specific requirements.

Grounds Maintenance:

  • Perform a range of landscaping activities to maintain school grounds, including cleaning and trash removal on playground areas, filling in holes, mowing grass, trimming grass, cutting weeds, watering, and planting.
  • Keep outdoor areas safe and aesthetically pleasing.

Minor Maintenance:

  • Conduct minor, job-related maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture, and fixtures. This includes tasks such as changing vacuum cleaner belts, and bags, repairing desks and tables, changing light bulbs, and performing basic painting.

Summer Maintenance:

  • Participate in summer maintenance activities, such as strip/waxing floors, moving furniture, painting, and other tasks to facilitate summer construction and upkeep of facilities.

Daily Operations:

  • Prepare school facilities for daily operations, which may include unlocking doors, checking systems (heating, cooling, lighting, and emergency), opening gates, sweeping walkways, and raising flags.
  • Ensure that facilities are operational and free of hazards at the start of each day.

Winter Weather Response:

  • Remove snow, ice, sand, debris, and other hazards from building areas as needed and/or assigned to ensure access and safety during winter weather conditions.

Supply Management:

  • Replenish classroom and restroom supplies, including paper towels, soap, and other essentials, to ensure an adequate quantity for daily use.
  • Monitor and manage inventory levels.

Information and Assistance:

  • Respond to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and visitors, providing information, assistance, and direction regarding activities, safety issues, and proper maintenance of facilities and equipment.

Emergency Response:

  • Monitor students and staff in and around work areas for the purpose of responding to emergency situations and/or informing appropriate parties.
  • Maintain and utilize emergency shut-off locations (e.g., water, gas, electricity) to reduce property damage and risk of injury as needed.

Supporting Site Maintenance Staff:

  • Collaborate with other site maintenance staff (e.g., grounds, trades, etc.) to ensure the completion of site custodial activities.

Job Requirements:

  • Basic math skills and the ability to follow instructions.
  • Knowledge of industrial cleaning methods and safety procedures.
  • Ability to operate job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility to work with a diverse team and handle interruptions.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Dependability and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to work under direct supervision.

Work Environment:

  • Physical demands include lifting, carrying, pushing, and some climbing.
  • Frequent stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Predominantly walking and standing.
  • Work may occur in some hazardous conditions and minimal temperature variations.

Other Functions:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned to support building operations.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to pass an ASP/FBI background check.
  • State of Arkansas Low-Pressure Boiler/Operators license.
